- On my four hour flight from Montego Bay, Jamaica to Washington DC to witness the historic event of the inauguration of the first African-American president and commander-in-chief, I decided to occupy my time reviewing the involvement and responsibilities of slavery: in the continent of Africa, the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the brutal and dehumanising treatment of slaves, the civil war and the many casualties including the tragic death of Dr Martin Luther King Jnr.
