Organising Conference for Reps

TSSA has arranged a one-day Organising conference for our Reps. It will be held on the 22 June 2007 at Congress House (Great Russell Street, London) from 1000 to 1500.

All company level Reps - both industrial and health and safety - and Network Rail Area Council Reps are invited to attend. The aims of the conference are to:

- gain a better understanding of how an organising union such as TSSA works.

- identify ways of encouraging members to become activists and Reps within their workplaces.

- look at ways of maximising recruitment opportunities and membership within your workplace.

- consider how best to integrate your workplace activities within our branch structure and the wider democracy of your union.

Our Regional Organising Teams have been tasked with obtaining paid release for those Reps that we are inviting to the event. This is intended to be a key step in the Association’s objective of becoming an “organising” union. It is therefore important that, as one of our key representatives, you liaise with your Senior Regional Organiser to secure your attendance at this important conference.

It is vital that we get as many as possible of our key company reps to the conference and I look forward to seeing you on 22 June.

c2c Rail: c2c freeze on annual leave issue
c2c have now frozen any offers on extending your annual leave. The Company have said this is because of the restrictions put on them by the Department for Transport as a consequence of Nation Express having handed the keys back on the East Coast Mainline franchise. The DfT is determined to strip the group of its other franchises announced a bidding timetable for the c2c franchise, which is up for renewal in May 2011. The government clearly feels that it is unacceptable for the company to go on running its other more profitable franchises having given up its loss making East Coast franchise.

There’s a lot to learn from the way the predominately female workforce at Thomas Cook Dublin organised themselves and fought every inch of the way for a deal that recognised the years of loyal service they’d given the travel company. The average length of service was seven years – a long time in an industry where, in the UK, the average is just 18 months.

2009 August/September TSSA Journal: Editorial
The events at TSSA conference have sparked a debate which I, as editor of the journal, welcome. It’s nearly three years since I took on this job. My aim was, and still is, to provoke debate on issues that matter to TSSA members, to cover stories about TSSA members in their workplaces, encourage reps and other activists in the workplace to write in with their own experiences and that of their colleagues, to show others how they organise.
2009 June TSSA e-Special : A tale of two countries
A two country workshop with reps from the north and south of Ireland working in what are still publicly run services was posed the question: what would happen if an international company came into both countries to take over all bus and train services?
2009 June TSSA e-Special : You are the future
A theme of both TSSA annual conference and the reps seminar was globalisation and internationalism. Speeches from Gideon Shoko from ZARWU and Mac Urata of the ITF stressed the links. Nowhere was this more apparent than in the Irish public sector group. But all 170 reps at the seminar spent two days researching, thinking, discussing and coming up with solutions to their issues and problems. These leaders in their workplaces worked hard during the day and partied into the night.
2009 June TSSA e-Special : Holding the front line
Andy Bain, TSSA president, in his keynote address to conference, spoke of the ‘disconnect between the twin structures of the democratic and policy forming branches, divisional councils and conference which hold our leadership to account and the company based representatives at local and national level.’
Chiltern Railways: Is Chiltern listening?
As you know, your reps have been in talks for the last few months over the proposed restructure at Chiltern. The Company’s plan to reduce the working week to 35 hours seems to have hit another barrier. This time it’s not rosters but the Company purse.
Campaigns: TheTrainline.com misleading passengers on fare savings
Complain to the Advertising Standards Authority to help "Keep the Ticket Offices Open" - We need to act to ensure that the travelling public is made aware of TheTrainline.com’s misleading claims. 2009 May TSSA Journal: The last resort
As I pen my latest words of wisdom for TSSA Journal, affectionately referred to by some as ‘Doherty’s wows’ (or so I have been informed!), I cannot help but reflect on how significant the last month has been for TSSA. If ever there was clear evidence that our organising agenda is starting to deliver active and committed TSSA members in the workplace and beyond, this was the month we received it.

Alongside your vote to reject the 1.5% we also presented Thomas Cook with the results of your pay survey.

Equality for all managers in First Great Western Trains is the aim of a new campaign writes Tony Wheeler, TSSA senior regional organiser. Andy Bain, TSSA president, looked back at the year to see what the union had achieved and what needed to be done. He stressed the importance of organising and gave his definition of the organising model as ‘the maximising of lay member and representative involvement in industrial relations and decision making’. Andy spoke of the birth of the union in the 1890s and the role of dedicated and committed activists who worked in the spirit of collectivism.
